Let’s Shift Our Gas Tax Overseas!

May 6, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The high cost of oil is hurting US consumers tremendously. At the same time, the low exchange rate of the dollar means we are selling our products very cheaply overseas. I propose a small adjustment.

First, remove all Federal and State taxes from the sale of gasoline. This will lower gas prices immediately and give relief to American producers, consumers, and delivery systems.

In order to make up for the lost revenue to the Federal and State governments, institute a special Money Crisis Export Surcharge. Everything that leaves the united States is subject to this special tax. Nothing is exempt.

To determine the amount of the special tax, calculate the estimated lost revenues from the State and Federal gas tax and sales tax and the estimated exports to arrive at a percentage.

Our products will still be cheap on the world market.

Foreigners will be paying this tax, not Americans.

The Federal government can reimburse each State for lost gas and sales taxes from this fund.

I don’t like taxes. This idea gives relief to Americans by eliminating a tax. At the same time it shifts the revenue burden to those in the world using our products.
