I heard President Ford say this on several occasions. I’m sure if he were quoting someone else he would have named his source.
These are in fact Jefferson’s words. While the quote is most well known for being used several times by Ford; it can be traced back to letters written by Jefferson.
No, Tomas Jefferson never said these words. Gerald Ford used this phrase in 1974 when speaking to a joint session of Congress. The entire sentence is:
“Whether we like it or not, the American wage earner and the American housewife are a lot better economists than most economists care to admit. They know that a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have. ”
They were not lifted from Jefferson in any way. Jefferson said -many- great things about independence from a tyranny government, but this is absolutely not one of them
